Post-Operative Care Timeline: Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery

Proper post-operative care is essential for safe healing and optimal results. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), combined with progressive scar management, supports recovery by reducing swelling and bruising, promoting fluid movement, minimizing fibrosis, and supporting healthy tissue healing. Treatment frequency and techniques vary based on the surgical approach, individual healing response, and surgeon guidance, helping to ensure a smoother, more comfortable recovery and long-term results.

Please note that post-operative treatments can only begin once your surgeon has provided clearance, to ensure your safety and proper healing.

Post-Operative Phase (Days 1-7)

Start early:
MLD may begin within 24–72 hours post-surgery, or within the first 5 days, once cleared by your surgeon. Early sessions focus on gentle lymphatic drainage to support fluid movement, reduce acute swelling, and calm the nervous system.

Scar considerations:

During this phase, scar work is indirect and protective. Techniques focus on supporting surrounding tissues, reducing tension, and preventing fluid congestion near incision sites. Direct scar contact is avoided until incisions are fully closed and cleared by the surgeon.

Frequency & duration:
  • 2–3 sessions per week
  • Typically 45–60 minutes per session, based on tolerance and areas treated

Active Recovery Phase (Weeks 2-4)

Ongoing support:
MLD continues to assist lymphatic flow, reduce inflammation, and support comfort and mobility as tissues begin to remodel.

Scar management integration:

Once incisions are closed and medically cleared, gentle scar education and early-stage techniques may be introduced. This can include superficial mobilization, tissue hydration strategies, and guidance on reducing tension and adhesions around incision areas.

Frequency & duration:
  • 1–2 sessions per week
  • Sessions are often 45–60 minutes, adjusted to healing response

Transition & Remodelling Phase Phase (Weeks 5-8+)

Gradual reduction:
As swelling decreases and tissues stabilize, MLD sessions are spaced further apart while scar work becomes more targeted.

Scar management focus:

This phase emphasizes improving scar mobility, elasticity, and integration with surrounding tissues. Techniques may address firmness, restriction, or early fibrosis, supporting long-term comfort and aesthetic outcomes.

Frequency & duration:
  • Weekly or bi-weekly sessions
  • 30–45 minutes per session, as appropriate

Long Term Maintenance & Optimization

Ongoing support:
MLD continues to assist lymphatic flow, reduce inflammation, and support comfort and mobility as tissues begin to remodel.

Ongoing support:
Some individuals benefit from occasional MLD and scar management sessions beyond the initial recovery period, particularly if they experience persistent swelling, tissue firmness, or restricted movement.

Scar health over time:

Long-term strategies may include continued mobilization, desensitization, and education on self-care to support scar maturation and overall tissue health.

Important Considerations

Personalized care:
Your MLD and scar management plan should be individualized based on surgical technique, liposuction volume, incision placement, healing rate, and personal recovery goals. Treatment plans should be reassessed regularly.

Qualified provider:
Lymphatic care should be provided by a registered massage therapist trained in post-surgical lymphatic and scar management techniques. Other healthcare providers in your circle of care, including compression fitting and nutrition should also be trained in post-surgical lymphatic care.

Listen to your body:
Healing timelines vary. Treatment frequency and techniques should be adjusted based on tissue response and comfort. Be gentle with yourself, give your body time to heal and balance.

Part of a broader recovery plan:
MLD and scar management are most effective when integrated with surgeon-directed care, including compression garments, movement guidelines, and appropriate self-care practices.

Always follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and communicate with your care team throughout your recovery.
Remember - this is your journey, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Every question is welcome,
and your clarity, confidence, and peace of mind are just as important as your physical recovery.
First Appointment Recommendation:
Book Your Treatment!

For your initial visit, I recommend a 45-minute MLD treatment to assess your needs and discuss a personalized treatment plan and give you an initial treatment.

Depending on your individual surgery and recovery, the frequency and length of future appointments may change, and we will review and adjust your plan at each visit.
