Who should not have MLD - and what are the precautions?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle and highly effective therapy with a wide range of applications. However, there are certain conditions where MLD is not appropriate or must be approached with caution.

Absolute Contraindications
MLD should not be performed in the presence of:
  • Metastatic or systemic malignant conditions
  • Acute inflammation caused by bacteria, viruses, or foreign bodies
  • Thrombosis where there is a risk of embolism
  • Edema related to cardiac decompensation (manual drainage may worsen the condition)

Conditions Requiring Caution
MLD may be appropriate in some cases, but only with proper assessment and medical clearance. Written approval from a primary care provider or medical doctor is required before treatment in the following situations:
  • Edema following carcinoma treatment
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Hypotension
  • Diabetes

A thorough health history and sound clinical judgment are essential before beginning treatment.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, developed by
Emil Vodder, remains an invaluable therapeutic approach. When applied responsibly and with respect for contraindications, it offers meaningful support to clients and contributes positively to overall health and wellbeing.

First Appointment Recommendation:
Book Your Massage!

For your initial visit, I recommend a 60-minute MLD treatment to assess your needs and discuss a personalized treatment plan.

Future sessions can be 30 or 45 minutes to focus on targeted areas of concern.
Alternatively, you can choose to incorporate your lymphatic treatment into any regular massage therapy session for added benefits. I look forward to helping you feel your best!
