Head, Neck & Scalp Massage: the ultimate headache and stress buster!

Indian head massage originates from an Indian medicine system called Ayurveda (meaning the ‘science of life’), whereby it is believed that the mind and body are intricately connected and can influence one another. Through this theory, is is understood that head massage can not only reduce headaches and improve physical well-being, but it can also improve mental and emotional wellness too. Champissage, is a treatment that focuses on massaging acupressure points along the head, neck, and shoulders, which has often been used to relieve stress, but traditionally used to improve hair and scalp conditions.

It is through these techniques that Anne offers a full therapeutic and deeply relaxing Head, Neck & Scalp massage.

What is a Head, Neck & Scalp Massage?

Therapeutic and relaxing, this treatment involves working with a firm and gentle rhythm to help unknot tight shoulders, neck and scalp muscles and relieve pain from the built-up tension. The head and hair are extremely sensitive as the scalp is crowded with nerve endings. This makes them very receptive to touch. It tackles the physical, mental and emotional effects of stress in a unique and particularly effective way. Massaging the head and hair is soothing and deeply relaxing.

What does a treatment look like?

This treatment includes massage to your upper back and shoulders, upper chest, neck, head and scalp.

A typical head massage treatment, usually starts with some basic cranio sacral holds, to connect, relax and synch rhythms to the therapist. Treatment  will then begin to relax the shoulders, working into this area especially as it often holds a lot of tension; and the upper chest around the clavicles will also be treated. Following this, flowing motions will move up the neck to relieve any stress and tension. The scalp is massaged and acupressure along the SEN lines are addressed. Finally acupressure points are also treated in the face area.

You will be asked to remove all jewelry, glasses and hearing aids, as well as your upper clothing to access your upper chest and back, neck and head. Anne will be working with your neck, head and scalp, shoulders, upper chest, hair and ears.  Organic coconut oil is used during the traditional massage techniques.

Note: Your hair may be oily after treatment.

Benefits of Head Massage

The success of treatment depends on how severe the symptoms are and how well the patient relaxes to receive treatment.

This therapy can provide a variety of benefits:
  • May reduce intensity and frequency of headaches and migraines by releasing built-up tension
  • Renews and balances energy levels
  • Reduces eye strain
  • May decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety/stress through relaxation
  • Boosts memory capabilities by relieving stress and quieting the mind
  • Stimulates lymphatic drainage by circulating blood to the neck area
  • Better sleep by reducing stress
  • Improves circulation of cerebral spinal fluid
  • Promotes hair growth by increasing oxygen in the hair follicles which stimulates growth and health.

History

The Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice used in India for over 2,000 years, (since around 600 B.C), usually by mothers on their daughters. It is part of the Ayurvedic practice which aims to promote long life and balance the body’s energies. It was often used with spices and herbs that would promote good health and skin, and was used as a technique to keep long, thick hair in healthy condition.

Traditionally, the Indian head massage was used at weddings and births. Today, many babies still receive the massage to keep them in good health. In countries such as India and Turkey, head massage is commonly incorporated into the barber’s service, so if you’re ever abroad, consider getting your hair cut at the local salon!
