Skin Removal & Body Countouring Surgery: a healing approach for surgery after weight loss

Skin removal procedures are commonly performed following significant weight loss, pregnancy, or major body changes. These surgeries address excess skin that can contribute to discomfort, restricted movement, skin irritation, and challenges with hygiene. Depending on the procedure and clinical indication, they may be medically necessary, cosmetic, or a combination of both.

Many of these procedures are grouped under the broader category of Body Contouring Surgery. Due to the extent of tissue disruption involved, post-operative swelling, lymphatic congestion, and fascial restriction are common during recovery. Post-surgical manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), fascial release, and scar management play an important role in supporting efficient healing, helping to reduce persistent swelling, improve tissue mobility, support healthy scar formation, and restore functional movement. When introduced at the appropriate stage of recovery, these therapies can contribute to a smoother, more comfortable healing process and improved long-term outcomes

Please note that MLD treatments can only begin once your surgeon has provided clearance, to ensure your safety and proper healing.

Post-Surgical Manual Therapy Considerations

Following skin removal and body contouring surgery, post-operative manual therapy may be incorporated as part of a broader recovery plan to support quicker and more efficient healing of the tissues. Techniques such as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), fascial release, and scar management help support the reconnection and recovery of lymphatic, vascular, and neural pathways affected by surgery.

This care is used to:
  • Reduce post-operative swelling and fluid retention
  • Support lymphatic and circulatory flow
  • Improve soft tissue and fascial mobility
  • Guide healthy scar formation and tissue repatterning
  • Relieve physical tension and support the emotional stress of healing
  • Improve comfort and functional movement during recovery

Many patients report noticeable changes following treatment, including reduced heaviness or tightness, improved ease of movement, and a greater sense of control and confidence in their healing process.

All care is individualized based on the procedure performed and is provided in alignment with the surgeon’s post-operative recovery timelines, incorporating approval for each stage of treatment as determined during initial follow-up appointments, with a collaborative approach to healing.

Surgeries & Outcomes:  from structured post-surgical MLD, fascial release and scar management care

PANNICULECTOMY
A panniculectomy removes the overhanging apron of excess skin and fat (pannus) from the lower abdomen and is often medically indicated following major weight loss. Muscle tightening is not typically included.
Structured post-surgical care supports lymphatic drainage after significant tissue removal, help reduce persistent lower abdominal swelling, and address fascial restriction along the incision.
Expected outcomes include reduced discomfort, improved tissue mobility, and healthier scar formation.

ABDOMINOPLASTY (Tummy Tuck)
An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the abdominal musculature. Post-operative swelling and abdominal wall tightness are common.
Structured post-surgical care supports lymphatic adaptation to muscle repair and tissue repositioning, while scar management helps prevent long-term restriction.
Expected outcomes include decreased swelling, improved abdominal comfort, and enhanced functional movement.

BRACHIOPLASTY (Arm Lift)
An arm lift addresses loose skin of the upper arms, often following weight loss. Swelling, scar tissue formation, and temporary movement restriction may occur.
Structured post-surgical care supports lymphatic flow through the arms and help maintain shoulder and arm mobility.
Expected outcomes include reduced swelling, improved range of motion, and improved scar mobility.

THIGH LIFT
A thigh lift removes excess skin from the inner thighs. Due to the density of lymphatic structures in this region, swelling management is an important aspect of recovery.
Structured post-surgical care supports lymphatic drainage and tissue comfort.
Expected outcomes include reduced swelling, improved ease of movement, and healthier tissue healing.

LOWER BODY LIFT
A lower body lift addresses the abdomen, hips, buttocks, and outer thighs and involves extensive tissue disruption.
Structured post-surgical care supports global lymphatic flow, reduces prolonged swelling, and maintains soft tissue mobility.
Expected outcomes include improved comfort, smoother recovery, and more balanced tissue healing.

MASTOPEXY (Breast Lift)
A breast lift firms and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning tissue. Swelling and chest wall tightness are common.
Structured post-surgical care support chest and axillary lymphatic pathways and address tissue restriction.
Expected outcomes include reduced swelling, improved comfort, and improved scar mobility.

It's A Profound Healing Journey...

Healing after body contouring is not a quick process, but a slower, thoughtful, and methodical journey. It is one that - when supported with appropriate care - can be deeply effective, transformative, and lasting.
First Appointment Recommendation:
Book Your Massage!

For your initial visit, I recommend a 60-minute MLD treatment to assess your needs and discuss a personalized treatment plan.

Sixty-minute sessions are a common expectation for ongoing treatment times. Depending on your individual surgery and recovery, the frequency and length of future appointments may change, and we will review and adjust your plan at each visit.
