the art of healing through touch

Our incredible bodies are beautifully made with each part having a purpose and function to work in coordination with our systems and structure as a whole. There are 206 skeletal bones, 360 joints and as many as 840 muscles in the adult body. Muscles, joints, and bones work together so your body can move harmoniously. When one part is impaired, a chain reaction of imbalance throughout the body will happen - resulting in soreness, tenderness and often in pain.

Our muscles' function is to produce force and motion, and they are primarily responsible for maintaining change in our posture, locomotion, and movement of our internal organs.  The skeleton initially forms as soft cartilage in the body of a fetus, and it takes about 20 years for the cartilage to become bone through ossification. The 
joints are the moving parts of your skeletal system and they come in several 'styles' to facilitate different types of movement. The ends of your bones, where movement occurs, are protected by a lining of smooth cartilage. Tendons attach muscles to the bone and joints, and ligaments hold bone to bone. These are the structures that can be kept healthy through regular exercise, good diet, hydration and of course, manual therapies such as massage!

The most common problems with muscles are the aches and pains of daily use. Overuse of a muscle can cause soreness or cramping, and extreme overuse can result in a muscle strain or tear. Muscle aches can also be caused by nervous tension, lack of movement, poor diet and even dehydration. In our modern society, unfortunately, these are common issues that our bodies are faced with.

In my practice I like to look at the body as a whole, and understand where the imbalance is originating, instead of just working on the 'sore area'. The root cause of the issue is almost always located elsewhere in the body. I firmly believe that most of our complications originate from the center of our body, in particular our hips and pelvic core. Using gentle manipulations and a variety of techniques, I often work on this area as I incorporate movement and lymphatic work into my treatments to encourage the body to find its way back to balance.
